ABSTRACT

The action of the drama in each of the extracts from the some plays centres on specific objects: a silver cigarette case which is stolen, a lady’s fan and a handkerchief. The focus on a concrete object also helps to particularise the play and place its fairly direct moral message in a very specific context. In each of the plays concrete objects are used in slightly different ways but they all provide a focus for the dramatic structure and take on an element of symbolism. Objects are useful starting points for drama with young pupils. A. Cattanach suggests that play with objects, making objects with clay can be a way to stimulate drama for people with physical disabilities. Objects can be used as a starting point and focus for the drama when the children are framed as investigators.
