ABSTRACT

People are happier when they feel they belong. This chapter presents a collection of little things to think about that affect the feeling of belonging and therefore mental health and well-being. Transition is a huge time of uncertainty and anxiety for many pupils which impact their mental health and well-being. Research shows that transition into a new school is important for mental health. At age 15, pupils who had a poorer transition showed higher levels of depression and lower attainment. It also shows that vulnerable pupils experienced poorer transitions. Transition between key stages has to be managed carefully. It affects first impressions but also friendships. Support staff have a large role to play in helping pupils belong. They should be included in emotional literacy training and supported to develop listening skills.
