ABSTRACT

Many studies show that positive parent-school relationships improve outcomes for pupils, including academic and prosocial outcomes. Parents are mostly impressed by teachers. Teachers are generally seen as clever academic people. As a result, they will take the word of a teacher. If a teacher tells a parent their child is lazy and doesn’t work hard enough, the parent will believe that and berate them. That will be more people not understanding all behaviour is communication and using negative motivation to change the behaviour. Behaviour is unlikely to change, and the pupil’s self-esteem will be damaged. School is part of the community and will sometimes have to provide extra support for parents. Many schools do this successfully and become community hubs. Their staff and pupils benefit as a result.
