ABSTRACT

Despite numerous studies of lack of belonging issues for women in engineering education, and reportedly more gender issues than race issues, the women in this survey performed as well or better than male counterparts, and their seemingly better social skills contribute to their success rather than setting them apart. For all students, participation in academic programs was the key to success. This pattern was truer of women than men, and most true of minorities. Access to the success factors of internships and research may be the key issues, since access to them clearly favors White students.
