ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines discrimination as manifested in the everyday discourse of the victims who experienced it in their interactions, and shows show how their view of the phenomenon and the ways in which they deal with it are expressed in their discourse. It considers perceived discrimination (PD) studies in its field of research. The book presents the beginnings of PD in quantitative studies in the disciplines of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Migration Studies, and describes the main studies on PD that have been done with attention to discourse. It discusses the form of data collection; that is, what it means to work with co-constructed interviews in the field of Discourse Studies. The book also presents an analysis of the PD discourse of Spanish-speaking immigrants.
