ABSTRACT

This chapter provides perceived discrimination (PD) Studies in its field of research. It presents the beginnings of PD in quantitative studies in the disciplines of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Migration Studies, and describes the main studies on PD that have been done with attention to discourse. The chapter reviews the taxonomies of PD. D. J. Mellor used his taxonomy of racism for the first time in the case of Aboriginal Australians and replicated it for Vietnamese immigrants. PD began as part of quantitative studies to establish whether discrimination is a stressor associated to mental and physical health difficulties. PD literature has established that discrimination produces negative outcomes, and it has been classified as the most serious type of trauma: type III. PD from a Discourse Analytic perspective is a relatively new field of research, of which there are only a handful of studies.
