ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how working with co-constructed interviews (CIs) enriches data collection and how the interviewer’s participation, as in-group members, is influential in the final respondent’s discourse. It explains the Discourse Studies’ tools adopted in the analysis of perceived discrimination (PD) data. The chapter demonstrates that conducting CIs with in-group facilitators produces a type of discourse that, in total, reveals a deep incursion into the delicate topic that is being explored, as it makes the richness and complexities of the participants’ experiences emerge. The ideal condition for carrying out an effective CI that includes a sensitive topic, such as PD, is that the interviewer is an insider of the community with which the participant self-identifies. The CI approach proposes that the roles of both interviewer and interviewee need to be considered in the process of building qualitative data.
