ABSTRACT

This chapter further investigates the tensions as discussed in the previous chapter by introducing notions of surveillance and how the day to day processes of school meal time are being shaped by disciplinary forces. The management of the school restaurant at Peartree Academy is discussed which introduces the specific timings of the school lunch period in providing an overview of the impact this has on children. Furthermore, observations of the different roles in which staff undertake during meal time are illustrated. The rules and regulations imposed by staff begin to work against the original intensions of the school dining hall, which were to develop a community forum in which children are able to develop positive eating behaviours and make transitions as good citizens. Instead, the rules, regulations and constraints placed upon children mean they have less time to eat, socialise and interact which is part of the logistical limitations placed upon such a crucial time of day.
