ABSTRACT

Increasing awareness of our own biases and the dynamics of oppression is helpful, but awareness alone is not enough. Supervisors must be in a continual process of moving from knowledge and awareness to application. It is through this process that practitioners can shift their consciousness from the individual and group level to the systems level, which can prompt institutional and structural change. Supervisors can utilize an identity-conscious lens to explore the impact of institutional culture by increasing their ability to support supervisees as they bump against institutional structures that further oppression.
