ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors begins with defining the concept of critical democratic education, which came into development by the authors after much consideration. In the literature, we find terms such as civics education, citizenship education, democratic education, democratic civic education, education for a democracy, critical education, and social justice education. The authors show the term “democratic education” as having more possibility because they interpreted it to include pedagogical practices of democratically run classrooms and, in many cases, educational communities that worked to toward issues of social justice. Knowing with whom you are interacting is essential to a critical democratic classroom, especially in relation to the socio-political context of education and life.
