ABSTRACT

Educational institutions—schools and colleges—are similar in many respects to other organizations in society—including businesses, churches, political parties, public charities, foundations, and the like. Educational institutions, and we primarily mean public educational institutions, have a particular societal obligation and what we have called a “moral obligation” to participants. Faculty in educational settings should be seen as and should assume roles as agents for change. Critical thinking was defined in this work as thinking that leads to good judgment because it relies on criteria and context. That is a perfect overlay for considering change. The judgments should be hidden purposely, or just because they are not talked about explicitly. In our society, most policy is actually made by appointed officials, including those who work in the departments of education at the federal and state and local levels and school administrators.
