ABSTRACT

Across societies people face complicated choices in relation to developing and expressing allegiances to larger groups. Tensions between apparent requirements for global living together versus national living together are vivid in many contexts. Solutions and effective choices for civic engagement across contexts are rarely obvious. Civic education should engage young people in such complicated debates, and build up their capacities to engage with new challenges in the future. Yet many people do not gain such experiences in learning about how to live together. More generally, civic education seems disconnected from the needs of people to learn how to live together in the world. This concluding chapter expands on this theme, restating the problem this book has addressed, and reflecting on ways forward.
