ABSTRACT

This final chapter sets out our recommendations for moving towards more effective and fairer practice in pupil grouping for realising good educational outcomes for all young people, and for equality of opportunity in pupils’ access to high quality educational provision, and positive experiences of school. Our advice around effective and equitable practice in grouping pupils in sets and mixed attainment classes is grounded in the research literature, including our own empirical findings outlined in this book. We present the Dos and Don’ts of Attainment Grouping resource intended to support teachers and school leaders in reflecting on current practices, and identifying improvements. The chapter concludes with recommendations for policymakers and some areas for future research.
