ABSTRACT

Publications are beneficial to almost any career. They can enhance promotion prospects in a single organisation or field and can smooth the path from one sector to another. However, for maximum value, you will need to take a strategic approach, creating publications that align with your life and career goals.

We will review some ways of moving from student outputs to publications and introduce the concept of a publication strategy. Then we will outline the difference between student and professional writing, and equip you with tools to help you assess the quality of your own written outputs. You will meet three characters, Kris, Ella, and Nathan, whose publication and career stories we will follow throughout the book.

This chapter takes you through a process of learning about which types of publication will be most beneficial for your own unique situation. You will reflect on and clarify your goals, identify and evaluate your assets, and begin to find ways to bring the two together in a plan for the future.
