ABSTRACT
Producing a book is the first thing many people think of when they've completed their doctoral study. However, writing a book is a complex process and not right for everyone. This chapter will outline the types of books you can write and how your identified assets can help. We will discuss the initial stages: book proposals and how to do research for a book. Then we will cover sole-authored and co-authored books, edited collections, and short books in more detail, weighing the pros and cons. We explain what pedagogical features are and when you might use them. We also take you through what happens after you have submitted a manuscript to a publisher, explaining the mysteries of the production process and the arcane art of marketing. Our PIPs illustrate some ways books can support people's career goals, and practical exercises help to reinforce the lessons from this chapter.
