ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the formats most commonly thought of as ‘self-publishing’: e-books, hard copy books, podcasts, and audiobooks. (Other forms of self-publishing are covered in Chapters 6, 10, and 11.) We begin by considering when you might self-publish in these formats from your identified assets. We outline the difference between self-publishing and vanity publishing before discussing how to self-publish e-books, hard copy books, podcasts, and audiobooks.

As with commercial publishing, the work doesn't finish with publication, and we look at how to approach marketing when you self-publish. Our PIPs show some ways in which self-publishing can support career goals. Practical exercises will help you to figure out whether self-publishing could work for you and, if so, the next steps to take.
