ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an accessible, practical guide to corpus pragmatics for undergraduates and postgraduate students. It aims to elucidate the pragmatic concept(s) in question as well as to survey existing corpus-linguistic work in the area. The chapter explores and illustrates in good detail one specific research question in the area. It contains brief descriptions of further tasks; again, if necessary, data to be used will be made available on the companion website. The chapter is devoted to a practical task to be carried out by the reader; explains the relevant research background as well as the research question(s) to be addressed in good detail and describes the methodology to be used. It provides food for thought for seasoned pragmaticists unfamiliar with the corpus method. Corpus linguistics (CL), is a relatively method in linguistics. The chapter also presents an overview of this book.
