ABSTRACT

Given the number of stakeholders, school leadership should make curricular decisions that best fit the school community while serving students appropriately. There are excellent programs available to K–12 communities which are grounded in data, education theory and developed by experts in field of sex education. Lessons in the Rights, Respect, and Responsibility curriculum are 40 minutes long in the Grades K–5 series and 50 minutes in the Grades 6–12 series. These details suggest that this is a program written with the constraints and difficulties of public schools in mind. In a charged political environment that can be incredibly divisive, particularly on what many parents deem as sensitive an issue as adolescent sexuality education, a program that disarms the conservative right and meets the demands of the liberal left can only be applauded. The curriculum includes activities for students in Grades 9 through 12 to complete with parents and family to gain better understanding of personal family values and belief systems.
