ABSTRACT

This chapter presents results of several case studies examining events of national significance - political, cultural, and historical - and how these events have been visually represented in the news media. It deals with detailed discussion of attribution practices around the visual reporting provided by both professional and amateur sources. There are a number of ways in which one may explore the results of image-sourcing practices among these several news outlets and in relation to specialist reporting. Fairfax Media is the only news outlet to make considerable use of simple head shots of candidates. Fairfax Media and Guardian Australia use photographs of negative events relating to the election. Fairfax Media obtained photographs of Liberal Member of Parliament Julie Bishop using a phone while driving, publishing three images of her caught in the act. In relation to the federal election, both Fairfax Media and News Corp Australia published a number of unattributed photographs.
