ABSTRACT

This chapter explores small screen representations of men who provide primary care to their children, specifically in the context of television news media, talk shows, vlogs posted on Youtube, documentaries, and reality television. The chapter argues that, given many of these small screen representations are created by men who provide primary care, and in all instances include the voices of such men, they offer opportunities for resistance to normative narratives about men and carework. Such resistance at times does lead to the production of new moral imperatives placed upon men who provide primary care to their children, whilst at other times focus on caregiving as a joy, and as a normative part of masculinity. This chapter thus demonstrates that positive and non-normative representations of men as primary caregivers are possible.
