ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 concentrates on the language skills of EMI lecturers, providing evidence from the lecturers’ self-assessment of language and literacy knowledge and skills, as well as classroom studies investigating the teachers’ observed language performance. The chapter focuses on standardized assessments of the lecturers’ language skills in the form of certification procedures carried out by their institutions, outlining the development and use of TOEPAS, a performance-based English proficiency test for university lecturers developed at CIP. The chapter provides an insight into the impact assessments may have on lecturers’ attitudes towards EMI and their willingness to engage in competence development programs.
