ABSTRACT

Drawing from Zach Horton’s claim that “we have failed to develop an adequate level of scale literacy,” this chapter considers the role of scale in representations of ocean and how scale contributes to oceanic literacy. To do so, this chapter considers the history of the concept of scale and how scale is applied to observations of oceanic space. Specifically, this chapter turns to digital representations to consider how scalar thinking drives representations of ocean. Likewise, this chapter considers how scaled representations of ocean directly inform cultural imaginaries.
