ABSTRACT
This chapter considers the primacy of visual representation in the formation of ocean in cultural imaginaries. To do so, this chapter considers the history of understanding light as a physical property and the role of the dissipation of light in ocean. Specifically, this chapter considers the role of light and ocean in creation myths. This chapter, then, examines the role of technological mediation in visual representations of ocean. Likewise, this chapter considers the role of darkness and the unseen in representations of ocean and the formation of ocean in cultural imaginaries.
