ABSTRACT

Mindfulness and the traditional way psychiatry is practiced are really more divergent than anything else. Psychiatry is about removing emotional pain, whereas mindfulness teaches the value of being present with pain. Social therapy is a postmodern group therapy that has at its centerpiece emotional growth and development. Essential to its practice is the philosophical exploration of how human beings have the unique characteristic of being able to simultaneously be who we are and be who we are becoming. The family therapist examines the child’s social context, revealing the stressors to which the child is reacting. Family therapy is particularly effective for children’s problems since the family is dominant in the child’s social environment. For parents, it’s natural to want to solve problems for their children as well as for close friends and family members. Parents of teens and young adults are often generationally sandwiched between the child and their own parents.
