ABSTRACT

In a globalized world, study abroad can play a central role in the undergraduate student experience to profoundly influence individuals to be more globally informed and involved. The study abroad experience provides individuals with a transformative learning experience at a pivotal time of personal development. The international experience provided through study abroad continues to impact participants throughout their life. The inception of Japan Study is an act of diplomacy: it was founded in 1963 at the request of US Ambassador to Japan Edwin Reischauer in recognition of the importance of the US-Japan relationship in a changing global world post World War II. The creation of Japan Study signaled the relationship of the two countries requiring not only economic and political cooperation but also sociocultural cooperation through increased understandings and connections. The emergence of knowledge diplomacy provides a framework for inquiry into study abroad programs and their role in transnational awareness and connectivity.
