ABSTRACT

Planning and creating stimulating multi-sensory spaces where activities can take place can be a time-consuming activity. Time is something that is often in short supply for teachers and support staff in special schools. This book provides some ideas and short cuts to create simple and stimulating environments within a classroom or school hall. The environments can be used at many different levels. For example each setting is designed to have visual, auditory and kinaesthetic stimuli and to be an intriguing space to enter. Each environment has been carefully put together to be multi-sensory and to be accessible to participants who may not be able to see very well, those who can’t hear or those who have tactile aversions. The environments are also designed to be flexible. For some students, particularly some of those on the autistic spectrum, one stimulus at a time is often, but by no means always, more appropriate.
