ABSTRACT

The students can be involved in making the herb garden by piling the earth and planting the herbs, or the garden can be set up for them to come into. This chapter describes different sensory channels, equipment needed, and ways to make use of the Herb Garden. Many of the students in this particular group were wheelchair users so time was spent helping them out of their chairs onto mats and beanbags around the circle of bark chippings and earth. The students spent time experiencing the feel of the bark chippings and soil on their hands and feet (with shoes and socks off) and smelling the herbs (these were planted in the soil in pots so that the pots could be picked up and moved close to the student when necessary).
