ABSTRACT

Classrooms are interesting places. Often the walls have displays of work and other visually stimulating materials on them. However, this can be a distraction for some activities. Keeping students’ attention can be daunting when there is so much to look at in addition to inviting them to concentrate on. This chapter presents ways to ‘clean’ the space, clear the clutter from lines of sight and eliminate the possible distractions that are on the walls, as well as a simple way to identify the working space within a classroom. By using a roll of corrugated card about two metres high, all the distractions can be eliminated in the room at a stroke and make a clean space. One of the simplest methods of defining a space is to place a circle of carpet squares on the floor. This gives a clear indication to the students where to sit and the action can go on within the circle.
