ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at five aspects of high expectations. These five aspects are: Behaviors that reflect high expectations, ensuring rigor in instructional expectations, deeper levels of thinking, projects and project- and problem-based learning (PBL), and passion-based learning. Teachers’ beliefs, reflected in actions, demonstrate their expectations for their students. Although general guidelines are provided, students determine how they will research and present the topic provided. That said, there are various ways to integrate technology into classroom when designing and implementing PBLs. Genius Hour is an excellent way to enhance problem-based learning. Genius Hour is inspired by Google’s efforts with its employees, where 20% of employees’ time is motivated by passion and curiosity. Inherent in the philosophy of a Genius Hour is the notion that students’ topics are driven by things they value. However, some common mistakes can derail a successful Genius Hour experience for students.
