ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 discusses the ‘high points’ people feel in the sense of wonder – illuminating moments. The Chapter first covers the author’s own illuminating moments, then those of other writers over history. It then considers the ‘friendliness of belonging’ of such moments. It then moves to discussion of the ‘miraculous’ in our dealings with nature. It then considers the key catalysts of wonder, such as encounters with particular animals and plants. The chapter concludes by noting that ‘illuminating moments’ are powerful and can change one’s life forevermore. The author argues that people now need to speak out about such moments, as they help society understand the importance of our sense of wonder.
