ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 focuses on the first step in developing a research project – a review of the literature. The chapter examines the purposes of reviewing the literature and divides the process into three stages. Stage one is a review to generate an understanding of the topic using different types of literature such as dictionaries and handbooks. Stage two is finding important literature sources for the project that reflect theory and research in the topic by using the internet and databases. Advice is provided on selecting suitable sources. Stage three deals with reading strategies, particularly how to do critical reading. The chapter includes a template that can be used to review the literature, and criteria for selecting appropriate sources.
