ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the results addressing the research issues regarding the participants’ perceptions of the place and relevance of World Englishes (WE) and culture to English Language Teaching (ELT) in English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS). Inseparable to the discussions of the ownership of English are the questions of Standard English and models for learning and teaching English. An Irish ELICOS teacher and a proponent of the WE paradigm, stressed that the spread of English and the increasing number of EAL users have set an end to the dominance of British English as the standard model for English language. Some of these participants used metaphors to indicate their dissatisfaction with the idea of promoting a standard for English. The misconception that the integration of WE into ELT can be equated with teaching language learners different varieties of English was common in parts of participants’ discussions.
