ABSTRACT

This chapter provides suggestions for teacher education programs, in-service teacher training and professional development, curriculum design, and test development. To teach English as an International Language (EIL), teachers need to have broad awareness and understanding of the “diversity of forms and functions of English found today and how English may unite or divide in the global community”. In addition to linguistic knowledge about World Englishes, English language teachers need an awareness of the sociolinguistic realities of their local teaching context. The revision stage in teachers’ perceptions and beliefs can be challenging and complex as teachers interpret such new information through the lenses of their existing beliefs and engage in their own learning experiences. To facilitate the teaching of EIL, curriculum developers and syllabus designers need to acknowledge the linguistic and cultural diversity which is the nature of EIL in the teaching curriculum.
