ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews previous research on language use and development in study abroad contexts. The chapter begins with a brief discussion on earlier developments in SLA research on study abroad, with a primary focus on the process-oriented research that has increasingly drawn our attention over the past decade. I discuss how past research has shifted in terms of its focus from the monolithic study abroad context to the more complex and multiple nature of study abroad experiences for individuals. The chapter also delves into the theoretical framework of this study, namely, language socialization, as well as the discussions on the analytical frameworks, including social network analysis and conversation analysis.
