ABSTRACT

This chapter details the work of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), the local affiliate of a national organization often seen as the quintessential, stereotypical parent involvement association in the United States. In particular, this chapter focuses on the work of the PTA in fundraising for arts and environmental education at the school, and in making decisions about how best to spend the money collected. Working to overcome past mistakes, the group’s current leadership strove to plan events inclusive of all the school’s families—while lacking a formal channel for getting feedback from Spanish-speaking parents about activities they would like to see at the school. Although this solidly middle-class group of women made strides toward promoting social inclusion at Live Oak, the group remained functionally monolingual, and its repertoire did not include translingual practice.
