ABSTRACT

Children with special/additional Cognition and Learning needs fall into two groups: those with Specific, and those with Generalised or Global Learning Difficulties/Delay. Children present at school with varying aptitudes for learning and acquisition of knowledge, skills and understanding; both genetic and environmental factors influence these. Levels of parental/carer interest, expectations, and capacity for providing incidental and enrichment learning opportunities can reduce or increase educational advantage. David highlighted his enjoyment of learning through new topics, mentioning topics on Italy and the Tudors, especially. Generalised Learning Difficulties are sometimes referred to as Global Difficulties or Global Developmental Delay, where reaching all milestones is later than expected for age. Aleena presented with Moderate Learning Difficulties. Aleena had been referred because of delayed speech, language, fine motor and social skills. Discussion with a Support Assistant, involved with Aleena since she was in Reception, gave considerable insight into her presentation at school day-to-day.
