ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 reviews prior research dealing with political scandals and their effects. When allegations of misconduct are revealed, what is the effect on elected officials and candidates, particularly during a campaign? Do different types of scandals (financial, political, sexual) lead to different outcomes? What effect does the gender of the candidate, and of the voter, have? Among other things, studies suggest that the shared partisanship of voters and candidates can go a long way toward mitigating the impact of bad news.
