ABSTRACT

Higher education is critical for a vibrant Research and Development (R&D) sector that provides the platform for innovation in the economy. While on one hand, higher education institutions impart the essential skills and knowledge that give the base for undertaking research and serve as incubators for developing new technologies, on the other hand, a well-functioning R&D ecosystem provides important inputs towards meaningful higher education. R&D is usually a long process over time with considerable uncertainties about the outcome attached to the activities. Besides, the private sector including large corporations and higher education institutions contribute to R&D funding, albeit on much smaller scale compared to the public sector. The output of research and development can broadly be classified into research papers, publications, journals and Intellectual Property Rights. The numbers have been mapped with the education qualification of the personnel, thus enabling demand-supply gap analysis.
