ABSTRACT

The Indian education landscape has witnessed significant structural changes in recent decades; in particular, the increasing role of the private sector has been a key development of late compared to the public sector dominated system of the past. Private colleges account for more than half of the student enrolment in higher education in India. Though a majority of women attend government colleges, enrolment of women in private unaided colleges has grown faster than in any other type of institution, showing that access to this segment has increased significantly. All institutions run by municipal corporations, municipal committees, notified area committees, zilla parishads, panchayat samitis, and cantonment boards have been treated as local body institutions. A private and aided institution is one, which is run by an individual or a private organization and receives maintenance grants partly or fully from the government or local body.
