ABSTRACT

Equity in access to education can be looked at from different perspectives–across gender, social group, religion and income bracket. In addition, there are geographical disparities between rural and urban India that have been in existence for a long time. Equity in higher education has been assessed from aspects: educational attainment and current enrolment at various levels of higher education. The gender disparity that is prevalent in Indian society is apparent in access to higher education as has been brought out by different sources of data. Indian society has several social divisions, and divisions are borne out in data on higher education. Rural areas are in general deprived of basic facilities, access to higher education is even more so, while level of education attainment in urban areas is much higher than in rural areas. The education rounds are used to study the disparities in current enrolment in higher education in context of socio-economic characteristics of the students enrolled.
