ABSTRACT

The overriding objective of sociolinguistics is to study the synergy that exists among language, society, culture, and verbal interaction. To this equation one can add media, new and old, and how these shape language and the type of communications that emerge in virtual spaces. This chapter looks at the effects of media on language and social change. Sometimes the trigger for change might be the language itself; other times it may be the medium; and other times still it may be social change. This final chapter will look at aspects of this equation.
