ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the issue of our I-positions or we-positions from our identity as a human being. To understand the position of “I as a human being,” an example of some leaders who have played a historically prominent role in situations of group conflict is considered. It is possible to switch from “I as a member of a group” to “I as a human being.” This switch makes it possible to evaluate a certain event in different ways. Great leaders have taught that participating in global society requires that one should not describe a person only as belonging to a certain group, but also as a human being or a citizen of the world. Commonality with people from other cultures can flourish by regarding them not just as representatives of their specific group, but also as individuals and world citizens, just as we are. The recent coronavirus pandemic demonstrates that the different levels of inclusion should be carefully distinguished.
