ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the development of a position that makes it possible to have a democratic dialogue with other people who differ from us in their opinions on certain issues. In our daily lives, we naturally adopt points of view that are different from those of others. Open-mindedness is not only a possibility of the mind of individual people, but its presence or absence can also be observed at the level of states. A contemporary example is the relationship between Hong Kong and China during the 2019 Hong Kong uproar. If the boundaries of a position are OPEN, we are able to look beyond the limits of our own point of view and we can consider alternative or even contrary opinions. The boundaries of a position can also be CLOSED. Closing boundaries is necessary if somebody tries to exploit one and is all too eager to make use of their willingness to help them.
