ABSTRACT

The OGAP Additive Framework consists of four parts: Problem Structures, the Addition Progression, Subtraction Progression, and Base Ten Number Progression. The learning progressions, which are introduced in this chapter, are based on mathematics education research and are developed at a grain size that is usable by classroom teachers and students when working on concepts of number, base ten, addition, and subtraction. They are designed to be used to analyze students’ strategies and develop instructional next steps which provide all students with access to the content and move them forward mathematically. OGAP is a content-focused formative assessment system that involves implementing an ongoing cycle with three parts: Collect evidence, analyze evidence, and respond to evidence. In order to truly be formative in nature it is essential that all three parts of the OGAP Cycle be completed in a timely manner. Engaging in the cycle provides important information about where students are in their understanding and an appropriate instructional response.
