ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on texts that retell the story of prominent British explorer Robert Falcon Scott, primarily remembered for his tragic final Terra Nova expedition during which he and four other crew members perished on their return from the South Pole. The chapter explores how this story has been rewritten over the past century focusing on the role of children’s books in shaping Scott’s narrative, the remarkable continuity within retellings, and how death is positioned as a victory in the stories. The chapter also introduces the ‘Heroic Era’ chronotope to explore the construction of time in Antarctic children’s literature.
