ABSTRACT

The signs for dyslexia are numerous and they depend on the age of the individual, i.e., before starting school as opposed to early years or primary school and even adults. Both the International Dyslexia Association and the British Dyslexia Association have excellent resources on their websites regarding signs of dyslexia that you can consult and download. For now, it is important for you as a teacher to realise that dyslexia may manifest itself in the following ways: Learning to speak, learning letters and their sounds, organising written and spoken language, memorising number facts, reading speed, spelling, learning comprehension and learning a foreign language. If you are looking for age specific signs of dyslexia, consult the websites of both organisations for detailed symptoms. However, note that not all students with dyslexia will have all of the mentioned difficulties. As a teacher, you might have access to a dyslexia checklist or you may even apply open tests designed for teachers, but you cannot formally diagnose dyslexia as this process requires a full psycho-educational evaluation and a technical report which is usually performed by a qualified and registered educational psychologist.
