ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents the findings from this longitudinal study from the perspectives of a range of service providers and users. It explores three sections: context and introducing the study; experiences and outcomes; critical factors in establishing inclusive learning environments. The book provides an international overview of developments and challenges in educational inclusion. It also provides a foundation for justifying consideration of the learning experiences of students with special educational needs and their families and for analysis of the learning outcomes of students with special educational needs within a mainstream context. The book presents evidence for a discussion of the experiences of students with special educational needs in mainstream schools. It discusses the learning experiences of the students alongside their opportunities for social engagement and participation in the broader life of the school.
