How can we tell what students learned in the lesson?

Responsive teachers assess student learning at the end of each lesson and respond accordingly. It is hard to know what students have learned without a direct measure; objective measures are needed to catch student errors early and understand how students are really doing. This can be achieved by any task which encapsulates the lesson and is swift to answer and to mark, such as an exit ticket. We can respond by adapting the next lesson based on an analysis of students’ exit ticket responses.
