ABSTRACT

I taught poorly for a long time: sometimes despite my best efforts, sometimes because my efforts were misguided. When I began to grasp formative assessment better, I was smitten: I saw that, if I could put its principles into practice, I could support my students to achieve the success they deserved. Writing this book has helped me to appreciate the enormous potential cognitive science and formative assessment have to improve our teaching. I hope you find the ideas in the book help you to teach more responsively, and help your students to greater success. Please let me know what you make of them, how you use them, and how they can be improved.
