ABSTRACT

This chapter explores particular roles and how they interact with effective professional learning, middle leaders, early career teachers, support staff and governors. It describes how career development and professional learning should reinforce one another. The chapter outlines some key factors of effective facilitation and delivery of professional learning. The most successful schools create plans for professional learning that span at least one academic year. The professional learning planning process needs to analyse needs from multiple sources of information and for multiple groups: individual staff; staff teams and middle leadership; and whole organisation and senior leadership. Pragmatically, any professional learning plan starts with three key elements. These elements include the time available for professional learning, the resource available for professional learning, and the intended outcomes of the professional learning. The key role of the professional learning planner is to draw together the plan, and continue to balance priorities and resources as short, medium and long-term priorities change.
